Lay the draw bot: automating LTD on Betfair

Lay the draw is one of the best-known exchange football strategies. Here's how it works, what you're risking, and how a bot can run it for you.

How lay the draw works

When you lay the draw, you're betting that a match won't finish level. If either team wins, you keep the backer's stake. If it ends a draw, you pay out the backer's winnings, which is your liability.

Draw prices usually sit well above evens, so the liability on each bet is bigger than the stake you win. Lay £10 at 3.5 and you win £10 on a home or away win, but lose £25 on a draw.

Two ways to play it

Lay and leave. Lay the draw and let the match run. Simple, but a draw costs the full liability.

Lay and green up. Lay the draw, and when a goal goes in the draw price usually drifts. Backing the draw again at the bigger price can lock in a profit whatever the result. That's green up.

Why automate it

Doing this by hand means being at a screen for every match. A bot places the lay at your stake, only within the price range you've set, and can green up for you. A stop-loss and a profit target stop it for the day when you say.

Questions

What happens if the match is a draw?

You lose your liability: the backer's stake multiplied by the draw price minus one. That's why setting your liability before you start matters.

Is lay the draw the same as trading?

Not always. Some people lay the draw and leave it until full time. Others lay before kick-off and green up after a goal to lock in a profit whatever the result. TheFootyBot can do either.

Can I automate it without watching matches?

Yes. The bot places the lay and, if you've set it up to, greens up for you, from the cloud.
